Someone once very close to me directed these words to me on more than one occasion, “you cannot expect life to be about creating things and making beauty. That’s a hobby, not a job.” I paraphrase.
I beg to differ. I believe that my sole purpose on this earth is to create, to get people to think and to tell beautiful stories. Without those of us who do that, what is the whole point of living? In human history, artists have always been the communicators. What is the point of a world without beauty – without creation – without stories? I don’t want to live in that world. I don’t want to live in a world without art, nor do I want to live in a world where I can’t turn my dreams into an artistic representation that touches other people.
Creating things is my job. Creating things is my passion. And I’m so lucky to be passionate about the work I do. So many people settle into a 9-5 office job that they hate because that’s the responsible thing to do. They live their lives, work for 40+ years, retire and die with little to show that they lived on this earth. I think it’s even more responsible to be passionate about the life you live and leave your mark on the world. For me, that is creating things. Not a hobby, just a job I love.
